Hillary John

Hillary is an award-winning communications professional with extensive experience developing award-winning communications content, key messages and collateral to reach internal and external audiences. At SKDK, she leads teams and develops strategic plans for its corporate and non-profit clients, including in its Multicultural Communications and Engagement practice.

Before joining SKDK, Hillary held various leadership roles in media relations and strategic communications at AARP and AARP Foundation, including working with the Board of Directors; leading equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives; and bringing awareness around advocacy, philanthropy and multicultural issues. On behalf of the CEO, she organized President Obama’s visit to AARP including United States Secretary of Labor Tom Perez, and Senators Elizabeth Warren and Corey Booker; led the CEO’s participation in the White House Conference on Aging; and directed communications for AARP’s support of the Affordable Care Act.

Also, she has worked for Fortune 500 companies including Sara Lee Corporation, serving as a media relations spokesperson; and for Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, managing a team focused on strategic communications outreach to diverse populations.

Hillary earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Florida A&M University and a master’s in strategic public relations from The George Washington University Graduate School of Political Management. Additionally, she taught graduate-level courses in strategic public relations at Georgetown University.

Hillary regularly volunteers at her church, and for Food and Friends delivering meals to people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challenging illnesses in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan community. A native of Wilmington, Del., she now resides in Maryland.
