Derrick Plummer has more than 14 years of experience as a strategic communicator specializing in public affairs, crisis and political communications, stakeholder engagement, multicultural, and media relations. He has led multiple high-profile communications efforts for multinational corporations managing the development and execution of multifaceted insights-driven, brand building communications programs to effectively help clients achieve their business goals and objectives.
Before joining SKDKnickerbocker, Plummer was a Senior Director at Purple Strategies where his portfolio included various Fortune 500 companies. Prior to Purple, he was a vice president on Edelman’s crisis and reputation and public affairs teams. At Edelman, his client work included providing strategic counsel and international communications support for companies including Delta, Nissan, Krispy Kreme, Under Armour, Arby’s, Barilla, Universal Health Services, Boston Consulting Group, and MailChimp.
Previously, Plummer served as assistant communications director for the United Food and Commercial Workers Union International (UFCW), providing strategic counsel on issues related to labor disputes in the retail sector. He has served as press secretary for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development during the first term of the Obama Administration, where he oversaw the agency’s press and media outreach, including the historic $25 billion mortgage servicing settlement agreement.
He also served on the Kerry/Edwards 2004 presidential campaign, as a regional press secretary and director of African American media affairs for the Democratic National Committee, and as communications director for Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-WI).
Plummer holds a B.A. in Political Science from Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA and a Master of Business Administration from Howard University. He lives in Maryland with his wife and daughter.
