Doug Thornell
Doug brings a wealth of experience in both corporate and political communications, most recently serving as a senior House Democratic communications strategist. Doug oversaw the press operation of former Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Congressman Chris Van Hollen’s (D-MD) personal and leadership offices and worked with other senior House aides on formulating the party’s communications and press strategy. He also provided strategic counseling on rapid response, messaging and crisis communications to close to 100 House Democrats.
Prior to that role, Doug was the National Press Secretary for the DCCC, where he was the lead spokesman for the committee overseeing House Democrats’ election efforts during the 2008 cycle when Democrats won over 20 seats.
Prior to the DCCC, Doug worked for the LawMedia Group, a public affairs firm, where he was a senior strategist for a variety of Fortune 50 companies, trade associations and non-profits on communications, crisis management, message development and third-party mobilization. He helped corporate clients, small start-ups and executives navigate complicated public policy debates by developing sophisticated messaging, image branding and grassroots/grass tops outreach plans.
This followed several high level roles in Congress and on presidential campaigns, including serving as a senior advisor to the Maryland Democratic Party, Traveling Press Secretary for Governor Howard Dean’s presidential campaign, Deputy Political Director at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) and Communications Director and Speechwriter for the Congressional Black Caucus.
Doug began his career as a political organizer for Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign and graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Government. He has appeared as a political analyst on MSNBC, FOX, WUSA, and XM Satellite Radio, as well as local radio and TV stations across the country.
