Doug Thornell is a strategist at SKDKnickerbocker, a top communications and political consulting firm in Washington, D.C and New York City. At SKDK, Doug works closely with Fortune 50 companies, trade associations, CEOs, political candidates, and non-profits on developing effective messaging, navigating complicated policy debates, handling crisis situations, and building coalitions.
Before joining SKDK, Doug was a senior advisor and oversaw the press operation for former Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) Chair and current House Budget Ranking member Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD). Doug helped lead the Democratic Leadership’s rapid response operation, formulate the Party’s message and overall press strategy. He also provided strategic counseling on messaging and crisis communications to individual members and their staff.
Prior to this, Doug was the Press Secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), where he was the lead national spokesman for the committee overseeing House Democrats’ election efforts during the 2008 cycle when Democrats won over 20 seats. Doug came over to the DCCC from the LawMedia Group, a public affairs firm, where he was a senior strategist helping clients develop sophisticated messaging, image branding and grassroots/grass tops outreach plans.
Doug has held several high level roles on the Hill and on political campaigns, serving as the Traveling Press Secretary for Governor Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential campaign, Deputy Political Director at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), and Communications Director for the Congressional Black Caucus under Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings. He started his career on Capitol Hill as a press aide to Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (D-CT).
Doug began his career as a political organizer for Al Gore’s 2000 presidential campaign. He is a graduate of Cornell University where he earned a degree in Government and also played Varsity football. Doug is a National Journal Political Insider and a contributor to Politico’s Arena. He has had columns published in such publications as The Hill, Huffington Post, and The Loop21. He regularly appears as a political analyst on CNN, MSNBC, FOX News Channel, FOXNEWS.Com, Current TV, WUSA, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Canadian Television, Russian Television, as well as local radio and TV stations across the country. The Marylander lives in the DC area with his two dogs, Gus and Chase.
